There is no question that major psychiatric disorders are severe medical illnesses. However, there is no single "biogenic imbalance" that causes such an illness. Rather, the complex interplay between several self-regulating intrinsic/endogenous subsystems, upon which the organism can "normally" rely, becomes distorted, for whatever reasons. And it takes time to get these systems back into stable self-regulation again. This "natural" time to recovery must not be confused with a delayed onset of action under antidepressants or antipsychotics.
